WISCONSIN'S TAX SYSTEM IS BROKEN:
HOW CAN WE FIX IT?
Gary
Bahr
Gary Bahr of Belleville argues that Wisconsin’s tax system needs a
major overhaul. Dave Zweifel says in The
Capital Times that Bahr may be right
(See
http://www.fightingbob.com/article.cfm?articleID=1105)
Gary Bahr is a
former farmer, realtor and banker and now owns a tree farm and bed
and breakfast near Belleville.
He was a Democratic
candidate for the state legislature in 1994. Bahr started the Stop
Taxes On Property (STOP) movement in 1994 and encouraged Democrats
to propose taking schools off property taxes. The proposal lost by
1 Republican vote in the State Senate. He has been arguing for state
tax reform for two decades.

Book review:
The Case for Big
Government
by Jeff Madrick
Reviewed by Paul Beckett
Political
scientist and TMI Board member Paul Beckett will provide a review of
economist Jeff Madrick’s recent book The Case for Big
Government, after which he will lead a discussion.
The role of
government has been under systematic attack for 30 years.
Government, we are told, is our enemy and “big government” is
incompatible with economic growth. Rejecting what seemed a solid
past consensus, the right wing wants to roll back the achievements
of the New Deal, and to close the door on a federal universal
single-payer health system.
What do we need
government to do? What is the truth about government’s role in
American social and economic development in past eras? Can we
afford bigger government? How can we undo the damage done over
three decades? How can we restore the public sense that government
is us, and that
it is through government that we solve our national problems?
