Johnson, president of the Japan
Policy Research Institute, has written
three books on the United States and empire. The trilogy

Republic", and "Nemesis: The Last Days of the
American Republic".

"The Central Liberal Truth:
How Politics
Can Change a Culture and Save
It from Itself"
Speaker: Lawrence
Harrison, Senior Research Fellow and
Adjunct Lecturer at the Fletcher School at Tufts
University
Since 1982, Harrison has
been researching and writing, mostly at Harvard, about how cultural
values help to explain why some countries and some ethnic or
religious groups do better than others. "The Central Liberal Truth"
is the seventh book he has either written or co-edited, and it
contains the goal of his academic work on culture: guidelines for
progressive cultural change. Between 1962 and 1982, Harrison
was with the US Agency for International Development, during which
time he directed five USAID missions in Latin America.
A discussion panel
including Paul Beckett and Joe Elder will follow the formal
presentation.

for the Study of the American Constitution, Department of History,
UW-Madison.
John
Kaminski has edited, co-edited, or written numerous books and
articles on the Revolutionary era with special emphasis on the
Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the judiciary, slavery, the
Founding Fathers, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Thomas
Paine. He has spoken on these subjects throughout the country and
abroad. Mr. Kaminski will discuss
executive power in the context of the Founding Fathers' attempts to
get the best out of the executive without endangering
liberty.
