The Progressive Round Table

The Progressive Round Table (PRT) is an informal study group which meets about once a month to examine topics of significance to our democratic society.  The discussion is sometimes led by a member of the group, sometimes by an outside expert.

PRT discussions are on Saturdays, 9:00 AM to noon.  This allows time for broad participation and exploration of issues in depth.  Many of the public programs put on by TMI grew out of PRT discussions.

TMI is a Grassroots Think Tank

Book review:

The Case for Big Government

by Jeff Madrick

Reviewed by Paul Beckett

Political scientist and TMI Board member Paul Beckett will provide a review of economist Jeff Madrick’s recent book The Case for Big Government, after which he will lead a discussion.

The role of government has been under systematic attack for 30 years.  Government, we are told, is our enemy and “big government” is incompatible with economic growth.  Rejecting what seemed a solid past consensus, the right wing wants to roll back the achievements of the New Deal, and to close the door on a federal universal single-payer health system.

What do we need government to do?  What is the truth about government’s role in American social and economic development in past eras?  Can we afford bigger government?  How can we undo the damage done over three decades?  How can we restore the public sense that government is us, and that it is through government that we solve our national problems?
